Owning a home is a never-ending responsibility. Once in a while it makes sense to take a step back, though, and look at the cost of ongoing maintenance vs. one-time investments. In this section we want to give home owners ideas of low-to-moderate cost improvements that can potentially have a big impact on their energy bill.

    Dr. Heet realizes that there are still houses out there that have no insulation at all. Dr. Heet does not want to discuss such obvious opportunities for improving a home's energy efficiency on this site. Other obvious measures include the installation of programmable thermostats, and actually using them. Instead, Dr. Heet focuses on identifying the more obscure and maybe less known yet equally or more effective opportunities. Such opportunities can be found in younger homes that were built during the past 20 to 30 years and are generally considered "energy efficient".
